About Rotary

Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 31,000 Rotary clubs located in 166 countries.

The most inclusive way to learn all there is to know about Rotary is the Rotary International Website

The Rotary Club of Truckee is part of District 5190. Rotary District 5190 encompasses the California Mother Lode, Northeastern California and the vast area of Northern Nevada. The District size is roughly 80,000 square miles. If you are interested in viewing more information about the numerous clubs within our district, here is a link, which includes their web sites and meeting dates.

Sample of Rotary Programs

Rotary has literally hundreds of different programs. There are international aid programs, such as the Polio Plus Foundation, disaster relief, fellowship exchange programs, national and local grants. Below are just a few of the many opportunities for growth and service available when joining Rotary.

Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE)

The most powerful force in the promotion of international understanding and peace is exposure to different cultures. The world becomes a smaller, friendlier place when we learn that all people — regardless of nationality — desire the same basic things: a safe, comfortable environment that allows for a rich and satisfying life for our children and ourselves. Youth Exchange provides thousands of young people with the opportunity to meet people from other lands and to experience their cultures. This plants the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding.

Each school year the Rotary Club of Truckee and the Sunrise Rotary participate in hosting an exchange student (typically age 15-19) from another country.  This task involves setting up host homes for the student to live during the year, as well as coordinating activities for the student outside the school.  Each Rotarian is asked to consider hosting a student for 3 months in their home, and sharing our customs and community with the student.  This is considered one of the most satisfying roles a Rotarian can undertake, and can result in friendships that last a lifetime.

Group Study Exchange

The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program provides opportunities for cultural and vocational exchange for professionals between the ages of 25 and 40.

Originally known as the Rotary Overseas Travel Award (ROTA), the GSE program was established in 1955 by a New Zealand district. It was adopted as an official educational program in 1965.

Faces of Hope Guatemala

Faces of Hope is a multi-club Rotary project established to provide an annual program that will deliver cleft lip and palate corrective surgeries for children in Guatemala. A cleft palate is a condition that causes the roof of a newborn's mouth not to join completely. Millions of children around the world suffer from this common birth defect.

Corrective surgery for clefts is vital not only because of the social stigma that comes with a facial deformity but also because  children with clefts are subject to malnutrition due to the difficulty they have in eating and swallowing properly.

The 2006 mission was supported by members of 11 District 5170 Rotary Clubs as well as non-Rotarians from our various communities. The Rotary Club of Truckee, California participated in this mission. Alongside the Medical Mission, a parallel humanitarian project team traveled to review and consider future projects that will affect either the children who are receiving the treatments, or the hospital where the surgeries are being performed.
