International Service is a key element in every Rotary Club.  Rotary International recognizes the importance of supporting our community, while reaching out to others around the world.  The fourth Avenue of Service encourages Rotarians, and by extension of their community, to think globally, to see the world as a whole, and to use their resources to achieve international understanding, goodwill , and peace.

Rotary Youth Exchange

Each school year the Rotary Club of Truckee and the Sunrise Rotary participate in hosting an exchange student (typically age 15-19) from another country.  This task involves setting up host homes for the student to live during the year, as well as coordinating activities for the student outside the school.  Each Rotarian is asked to consider hosting a student for 3 months in their home, and sharing our customs and community with the student.  This is considered one of the most satisfying roles a Rotarian can undertake, and can result in friendships that last a lifetime.

International Project

The International Project will vary from club to club.  A few years ago, the Rotary Club of Truckee "adopted" an orphanage in Mexicali, Mexico, and helped that organization with their site, buildings, and the purchase and delivery of a bus.  Presently, our club is coordinating with the Tahoe City Rotary Club to remodel a handicapped-student school in Mexico.

Group Study Exchange

The Group Study Exchange (GSE) is a team of 4 community members (non-Rotarians) plus one Rotarian leader that travels to another country to exchange ideas, learn about another culture, and foster and promote international understanding.  The outgoing team is selected on a District-wide basis in the fall of each year, and travels in April/May of each year.  The incoming team arrives about the same time.
