"Faces of Hope" Guatemala

Faces of Hope is a multi-club Rotary project established to provide an annual program that will deliver cleft lip and palate
corrective surgeries for children in Guatemala. A cleft palate is a condition that causes the roof of a newborn's mouth not to
join completely. Millions of children around the world suffer from this common birth defect.

Corrective surgery for clefts is vital not only because of the social stigma that comes with a facial deformity but also because
children with clefts are subject to malnutrition due to the difficulty they have in eating and swallowing properly.

The 2006 mission was supported by members of 11 District 5170 Rotary Clubs as well as non-Rotarians from our various
communities. The Rotary Club of Truckee, California participated in this mission. Alongside the Medical Mission,
a parallel humanitarian project team traveled to review and consider future projects that will affect either the children who
are receiving the treatments, or the hospital where the surgeries are being performed.

Finishing touches
Kitchen furnishings are now complete

Dear members of the Truckee Rotary,

The finishing touches of the Necafew Hope School kitchen are now complete, and we wanted to share with you the final results.

The state-of-the-art kitchen is truly exceptional in Guatemala.  The support of the Truckee Rotary has helped to create another way that New Hope School is a model for educational institutions in the country.  The kitchen facilities will allow us to begin a nutrition initiative with students at the school that are at the greatest risk for nutritional deficiencies.   This will ensure that the education of these students isn't threatened by the distraction of an empty stomach.
